cowboy boots and faith

As soon as we saw certain little anatomy on the ultrasound confirming all things blue,
we dreamed of a wild, skinned knee, mud-stomping, boot wearing boy.

Baker delivered all things wild, and skinned knees, and mud-stomping soon enough,
but the boots had to wait.

With Baker's different abilities, he requires some different equipment.

When he isn't padding around on his bare tootsies,
he is clomping here and there in his favorite tennis shoes
(most often New Balance 991s) with orthotics.
I posted more about that here.

Brian and I continued to dream about our boy in boots.
And Baker continued slipping his tiny foot into the big leather trough of his daddy's favorite leathers, pretending, as most little boys do, to be just like daddy.

We prayed, with expectation, for Baker's legs to be strong enough,
his ankles to be sure enough,
his balance to be stable enough to wear boots.

Sounds silly, right?
Praying for Baker to be strong enough to wear boots...but we did it.
Just like we prayed for him to crawl, and walk, and speak words, and drink through a straw, and give a high five, and point, and eat with a fork.
Things that might seem menial, but for us, are full of meaning.

They didn't make their debut when our favorite buckaroo turned two,
or on his fieldtrip to the Barnyard,
but finally, on farmer day, they were pulled out of the packaging, and with care, the tiniest cowboy boots were slipped on Baker's feet, and the receipt was finally crumbled and discarded with the day's trash.

We all rejoiced.

Baker pranced proudly around the house, and Brian and I cheered, like we do.
Silly parents, singing and dancing and hooping and hollering, at something so silly as a boy in boots.

Differently-Abled Toddler Gift Guide

In honor of Baker's second birthday,
I have compiled a gift guide for differently-abled toddlers.

Buying for a child with a disability is very similar, if not just like, buying for a child without a disability.

Just like most (almost) two year olds,  Baker is wild and silly.
He likes getting dirty, wants to play with anything loud, and loves having fun!

To ensure he is progressing and advancing in all areas of development,
I try to make sure his play is purposeful.
When I consider a toy, I ask these five questions.

1. Does the toy promote speech/language, fine or gross motor, cognitive, and/or sensory development?
2. Does the toy encourage exploration?
3. Does the toy engage his imagination?
4. Does the toy encourage active engagement (versus passive)?
5. Is it fun? (scientific, I know)
If it isn't fun, none of the others matter.

Here are some of my favorite toys for differently-abled children.

Unstoppable

I have always loved March 17.

It's a day we celebrate my beautiful friend, Ashley. She is a wonderful friend and the best mommy to a most precious little boy.

I get to eat Lucky Charms for breakfast.
Hello yummy goodness that is a bowl of milk filled with sugar, coated in sugar, and sprinkled with more sugar.
All the things are covered with leprechauns, glitter, pots of gold, clovers, and rainbows.
And it's a good excuse to wear my favorite green scarf and ink my boy with a glittery green tattoo.

Today, the good Lord gave me another reason to love March 17.

It is a day I will always remember as the day Baker walked.
Click on the video icon or access the YouTube video here.
I promise, you will want to watch all 28 seconds. Promise, promise!

From the day he was born, Brian and I have prayed over every inch of Baker's little body. We have prayed strength, and increased muscle tone, and for his little body to work in perfect harmony to walk in its time. We have gone to therapies, and ordered special orthotics, shoes, and hip helpers to teach and train his muscles. We have bandaged skinned knees, and kissed bitty baby bruises, and cheered big cheers. We have laughed and celebrated and encouraged and challenged.

Today, Baker walked.
Today, prayers were answered.
Today, we have grinned giddy grins.
Today, we have boasted in the goodness of our Lord and His perfect timing.

Today, I ordered a new pair of tennis shoes. I am quite certain my days of sitting are long gone. My boy is on the move and he is unstoppable.

Watch out world. Baker Boy is unstoppable!

Twenty months

This smiling boy is a whopping twenty months old today!

Cue obligatory "I cannot believe my baby is this old!!"
It's true.
I really can't believe it!

We have had the best day!

We started with chocolate chip pancakes and even a little cheers with Nana.
Twenty months with Baker is something to celebrate!

Next, he splished and splashed until he was just the right combination of pruny and squeaky clean.

We have had dance parties in the car,
walked up and down every other aisle of Target,
shopped for furniture for our new home (yes, and EEKK!)
sang and read and played with Baker's favorite toys.

I love Saturdays with this little one.

While I am a little weepy at how quickly he is growing,
I think this is going to be the most fun age.

Baker has been signing "walk" all the time.
He loves to be on his feet!

This excites me more than you could possibly know.
Absolutely nothing compares to seeing the joy on his face at this HUGE accomplishment.
This is evidence of hours and hours of physical therapy and countless prayers.

You rock, Baker Bell!

Baker has been saying "Ma Ma" for about a year.
He has signed "Da Da" and there is no doubt he knows and loves his daddy.
But, just recently, this has been happening.

Brian's face when Baker says his name, y'all, I just can't even deal.
I don't know if he was more proud when I met him at the alter and said "I Do."

Yep, this stage is something fabulous!
Happy twenty months, my sweet Baker Boy!

We love you the most!
